A deadly train crash in the southern state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive opposition criticisms regarding the speed and handling of the country's flagship infrastructure initiatives.
The accident happened on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a line developed to link the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was designed to establish an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, intended to promote regional growth in the area.
“We will meticulously determine the reasons behind this accident,” affirmed the country's president.
The president announced that, of the some 250 people on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in grave condition. The official noted plans to travel to Oaxaca to speak with those impacted.
Flagship Project of Previous Administration
The Interoceanic Train was a signature infrastructure project of the previous administration, whose time in office finished the previous year. This venture was closely associated with his government's strategic goals for the southern region.
Another ambitious rail project from that time, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the wider plan to revitalize the economic fortunes of a comparatively less developed part of the country.
Construction Oversight and Risks Apprehensions
The construction of both rail lines was overseen by the nation's military, marking a significant increase of its duties in public infrastructure. They were executed at an fast-tracked pace, surpassing predictions to be partially inaugurated before the end of that administration.
However, this fast-paced schedule had also sparked ongoing apprehensions over safety standards.
- Sunday's derailment was the third event on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
- This includes an earlier accident this month when a train struck a truck at a crossing.
- The other major rail project has also had two non-fatal derailments.
Calls for Investigation and Halt
In the aftermath of the catastrophe, the leader of a key rival party demanded an urgent suspension in the construction and operation of all similar projects.
This stoppage was proposed pending a full safety audit. The party stated that the loss of life "demands swift accountability."
In reply, the national leader asserted that the train had been running in total accordance with all safety requirements. Commitments were given that the government would be "diligent" in both the development and operation of these strategic projects.
